Using the Calendar in Yahoo Groups

(revised 06/18/05)

Using the CALENDAR in Yahoo Groups is a good way to schedule different parts of your session or send automatic reminders about important dates in your syllabus. It is a nice practice to send participants a weekly reminder of the activities planned for the week. Sunday evening would be a good time in order to reach all time-zones before the week starts.

1. Setting up the calendar:

a. Click on CALENDAR (navigation bar on the left):

b. You will then be shown a calendar, with different options for display - day - week- month - year ( (see Fig. 2 with the monthly option. We suggest to use this option):

c. You can choose from several options to set up your calendar, on the right bottom corner of the page (Group Calendar Option - See Fig. 3 -). Once you have set up your configuration, you can always edit them.

Note: If you wish, you can also set an event to repeat, and set up email notification reminders. You can schedule events for any time. To view event details, just locate the event and click its title. If you are setting reminders for each week of the session, you should check the "this event does not repeat" option.

How do I restrict access to this feature?

a. Go to the Group Settings section of the MANAGEMENT area (navigation bar on the left) - (See Fig. 7).

Can members be notified about a new calendar event?

If you set up a calendar to include an email reminder, then all members of your group will receive notification in advance of the event. You can set up two reminders, and these can be triggered anywhere from two weeks before the event to 15 minutes before the event.

How do I edit or delete events?

Edit an event:

a. Click on the "Edit" link, next to the event title. (If you have the older calendar version, click on the "pencil" image.)

b. Make the necessary changes and then click on the Update button.

Delete an event:
a. Click on the Delete link, next to the event title. (For older versions, click on the X image next to the event.)

b. Confirm and click on the Delete button.

Note: When following these instructions, please keep the following in mind:

  • Each group's owner can restrict access to certain features, including the group calendar, or turn them off altogether.
  • Before you begin, please make sure you are signed in with the proper Yahoo! ID.
